University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign

The University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) is worth exploring for consulting because it combines a large recruiting ecosystem with multiple student-run consulting organizations. Students can pursue client projects through Illinois Business Consulting, build recruiting skills through Illinois Consulting Academy, or gain experience working with nonprofits through SCNO. These options are not limited to one academic background: several organizations explicitly welcome students from across majors.

Consulting placement

UIUC’s latest undergraduate outcomes report covers students who graduated in August 2024, December 2024, and May 2025. University-wide, 93% of graduates with reported outcomes had secured a first destination—employment, additional education, or volunteer/service work—within six months. The report’s knowledge rate was 65%, so its results reflect known outcomes rather than every graduate.

The report identifies management consulting as an industry employing more than 100 graduates across the university. It also lists Deloitte, EY, KPMG, and PwC among employers hiring more than 30 graduates overall, and Accenture and Bain & Company among employers hiring more than three.

Gies College of Business reported a 96% secured-first-destination rate, a knowledge rate of 87%, and a median salary of $81,000 for graduates with reported salary data. The public report lists employers including Accenture, Bain & Company, Deloitte, EY, KPMG, and PwC, but does not provide a consulting-specific placement percentage for Gies graduates.

Consulting clubs

Illinois Business Consulting (IBC) is a major option for hands-on project experience. Housed in Gies College of Business, IBC describes itself as a student-run, professionally managed consulting organization. Its official page says 260 students conduct more than 60 projects each year for clients ranging from large companies to startups and nonprofits. It includes undergraduate and graduate students from nine colleges and 50 disciplines, making it relevant beyond business majors.

Illinois Consulting Academy (ICA) focuses on developing consulting skills and preparing students for recruitment. It offers spring bootcamps for sophomores and juniors, a case repository, sponsor presentations and networking, and alumni engagement.

Students Consulting for Nonprofit Organizations (SCNO) is open to UIUC students of all majors and ages. It works with nonprofit organizations each semester, giving students real-world consulting experience and opportunities to develop leadership and problem-solving skills. The organization says it has served more than 60 nonprofits since its founding.

Other options include OTCR Consulting, which focuses on client work and consulting preparation and draws primarily from business and engineering, and FACES Consulting, which offers project experience and research-based solutions for businesses. Check each organization’s current membership and recruiting process.

Career Services support

UIUC’s Career Center provides career coaching, résumé and cover-letter reviews, mock interviews, and Big Interview, an online interview-practice platform. Students can book a 60-minute mock interview with a trained interviewer during the semester when classes are in session. Big Interview is available online around the clock, including when live mock interviews are not offered. These resources can support behavioral interview preparation; ask whether a coach with consulting experience is available for case-specific practice.

For consulting-specific preparation, ICA’s case repository and bootcamps provide a more targeted route to case practice and recruiting preparation. IBC and other project-based organizations can also help you build résumé examples involving analysis, teamwork, client communication, and recommendations.

Recruiting timeline

ICA’s page identifies spring bootcamps for sophomores and juniors and states that its next application window opens in August 2026. Because application windows can change, check ICA’s page and student-organization announcements for updates.

For full-time and internship recruiting, track applications on each firm’s official careers site and check university recruiting channels for presentations, networking events, and interviews. Start case practice well before applications open, and use student consulting groups to build both client experience and a peer network.
