Carleton College

Carleton is a small liberal arts college in Northfield, MN, with no undergraduate business major for consulting directly, but there are opportunities on campus to get involved in the field. The Carleton Career Center says consulting firms hire from a wide variety of majors and that liberal arts students are attractive to them because of their critical thinking, writing, and data analysis skills. The support exists and Carleton has resources available to get started early in your higher education.

Placements

The Class of 2025 report shows Carleton reached an 86% knowledge rate. Of those graduates, 77% were employed and 18% were in graduate school. Boston Consulting Group appears on the Class of 2025 top employers list, alongside Microsoft, Epic Systems, and Walmart Global Tech. “Business, Finance, and Consulting” is also listed among the top industries.

Consulting clubs

Carleton Consulting Club; in fall 2025 it ran its first annual Consulting Case Competition on October 5. Teams of any major worked on a real business case and pitched to judges who work in consulting, plus a public audience.

Career Services Support for Consulting

The Career Center has a dedicated consulting page and a career coach for Business, Finance, and Consulting, Karen Eilers, who can be booked through Handshake. Here is what tools Carleton has available for consulting:

  • Case prep tools: Vault guides, including its case interview guide, and Big Interview for practicing management consulting interviews. You can also book a mock interview through Handshake.
  • Alumni access: CarlsChat sets up half-hour informational interviews with alumni in your target field. The Career Center says to build your name recognition by meeting as many working professionals as possible, especially alumni.
  • Résumé review: The Career Center recommends a one-page résumé in a standard format that fits its approval process.
  • Digital assessments: The Career Center points students to Management Consulted’s University Hub for advice on the digital assessments some firms use.
  • Firm events: Past events include a McKinsey resume and case interview workshop held exclusively for Carleton students in May 2025.

Recruiting timeline

Carleton’s Career Center says consulting firms are among the earliest companies to post positions. According to Carleton’s consulting page:

  • Full-time deadlines typically fall between July and August of junior year.
  • Internship deadlines are shifting to summer or even spring, a year or more before the internship starts.
  • A junior-year internship at a well-known, high-profile organization is advised if you want to stand out for full-time offers.

On the Career Center’s broader recruiting calendar, fall tends to have the most corporate full-time and internship opportunities. Winter and spring skew toward nonprofit roles and internships. Employers reach students through Handshake postings, info sessions, tabling in Sayles-Hill, one-on-one meetings, and fairs run with the Minnesota Private Colleges Career Consortium.
