As an experienced hire, breaking into consulting isn't just hard – it's a different game entirely.
No clear channels. No defined deadlines. No obvious positions to apply for. And a hiring process where one wrong move quietly disqualifies you before you ever get a response.
Most lateral candidates don't fail because they're underqualified. They fail because they're playing by the wrong rules.
Former McKinsey and BCG consultant Laura Ackermann has been on both sides of that process – as a hiring manager, McKinsey interviewer, and career coach who's helped dozens of candidates land MBB offers. In this session, she'll give you the strategic roadmap experienced hires rarely get access to.
You'll walk away knowing how to position your background for consulting, target the right roles, network your way into the room, and interview as a lateral candidate – not a career changer who needs to apologize for the pivot.

More about Laura
Ex-BCG & McKinsey
Laura is a former McKinsey and BCG management consultant with 7 years' experience leading client projects, staffing teams, and recruiting candidates. She’s a passionate career coach who has successfully helped dozens of candidates receive MBB offers. She was a McKinsey interviewer herself and coached countless high potential candidates as an “office buddy”.
Laura is a strong believer in tailoring the case approach to each individual’s strengths and styles (just as a good team lead should!), and can offer case structures that are not only reproducible across cases but also feel authentic and specific to individual cases.
In addition to case coaching, Laura is passionate about helping candidates (1) Prepare for fit interviews by helping them come across as their best selves; (2) Identify their ideal home office by discussing the pros and cons of different offices across North America, Europe, and Asia - including ease of getting offers, pay and tax differences, as well as career progression prospects; (3) Negotiate job offers.
Laura grew up in China and Singapore, studied at the University of Cambridge in the UK, and started her career as an Analyst at a boutique consultancy in Australia, before moving to the US to join BCG’s San Francisco office as an Associate. Two years later she moved to McKinsey, where she spent a further four years all over the US before exiting as a Senior Engagement Manager. She’s since traveled the world, and settled in Berlin, Germany, where she’s running a negotiation consulting service for businesses and helping aspiring consultants advance their careers around the globe.
Laura is available to conduct sessions in English and/or Mandarin Chinese.
