Management Consultant Salary in India

Estimated Reading Time: 4 minutes

As businesses continue to grow and face complex challenges in India, management consultants are in increasingly high demand. Many of the consulting firms that you know and love in the United States (MBB, Big 4, etc.) also have a well-established presence in India, and one of the many perks of working at one of these firms is the competitive compensation they offer. However, there are a few key factors that influence pay levels, namely firm prestige and years of experience. In this article, we’ll go over the salary you can expect to make as a management consultant in India depending on the level of your role and the reputation of your firm.

As a consultant in India in 2024, you’ll be offered a relatively high wage and an abundance of professional opportunities. As expected, the MBB firms are among the highest paying consulting firms in India; therefore, if compensation is your biggest concern, be sure to look into the Big 3. Overall, management consulting salaries across the world have increased significantly over the last few years, even as work-life balance in the consulting world continues to improve—it’s a great time to break into the industry.

    • MBB: ₹24 / $28,538
    • Big 4: ₹16 / $19,025

As expected, the salaries of management consultants in India decrease as you move from the MBB tier to the mid-sized/boutique level. There are a few firms that stand out as higher-paying than their direct competitors, namely Bain, Accenture, and A.T. Kearney. Interestingly, Accenture pays a median base salary of roughly ₹24 lakhs per annum ($28,538)—a higher base than both McKinsey and Bain—with a comparatively lower bonus of around ₹30 ($356). A.T. Kearney pays a higher base and a higher bonus than McKinsey, as well as all of the Big 4. Overall, the average annual salary of a management consultant in India is around ₹18 lakhs per annum, which translates into roughly $21,000 USD. If you’re thinking this seems low, you would be correct (more on that later).

India Management Consultant Career Path

After a few years, many consultants in India choose to exit the consulting pipeline, perhaps choosing to pursue an MBA or a position at a more specialized company. However, those who stay at their respective firms wait a few years until they are promoted to the next level. For entry-level roles (associates and consultants), it typically takes 2-3 years until they advance to the next level. Mid-level roles (senior consultants and engagement managers) wait 6-7 years until they are promoted to principals, who wait 10-15 years until they are finally promoted to partners. Overall, the progression from associate to partner at an India consulting firm takes roughly 18-25 years.

India Consultant Salary vs. US Consultant Salary

The average salary of an Indian consultant is notably lower than that of a US consultant. This can be said for both the base and bonus salary. This is partially offset by the lower cost of living in India. To illustrate, let’s compare housing costs in Mumbai and NYC—two cities that are comparable in size, economic significance, and population density. Rent for a 1-bedroom apartment costs approximately $750 a month in Mumbai, and costs around $4,000 a month in NYC. This means housing can be around five times more expensive in the United States! That’s a big difference. However, it’s important to note that the cost of living in either country can differ depending on the specific city, lifestyle choices, and income levels. Additionally, management consultants in the United States and India receive similar benefits, such as health insurance, professional development programs, and opportunities for international travel.

Conclusion

Even though the industry pays a comparatively lower salary than in the United States, management consulting is still considered one of the most coveted and high-paying career paths in India. While compensation varies based on firm reputation, experience, and specialization, management consultants in India are paid for their hard work and invaluable business insights. Interested?
