The 4 concepts you need to understand - and apply - to solve case study interviews. September 7, 6-9PM ET.
Case interviews test a handful of key attributes: the ability to structure a problem and process; communicate that in a linear and clear fashion; solve quantitative problems; and demonstrate business understanding.
Just like in football, the fundamentals (blocking and tackling) often mean the difference between success and failure. When it comes to casing, business formulas are one of those fundamentals.
Before you go off to learn the latest business buzzword, stop yourself. Do you know how to calculate ROA, payback period, and Current Ratio? Better yet, do you know how to apply your calculations to develop insights for your client?
Spend your time on the tactical skills that will grant you success in the case interview, and leave the latest business buzzword to the posers.
This 1-day intensive is a deep dive into core Case Formulas you need to know. We will cover formulas that fall into 4 categories: Profit, Market, Operations, and M&A. Practice using each category of formulas to prepare for the case interview – and life beyond!
Understand what to solve for – and how
Why do so many candidates hit a roadblock in the case? They either don’t know which calculations would be useful in that moment, or if they know the calculation they’d like to run, they don’t know the formula to use.
That’s why we developed the Case Formulas Intensive. This isn’t a Business 101 class – we’re expecting you to understand how to calculate basic metrics like revenue, fixed cost, variable cost, net profit, market size and more.
After 3 hours, you’ll be much more confident in your business understanding, application, and calculations. A recording is available if you can’t join the session live.
Your instructor is Stephanie Knight, former McKinsey Engagement Manager and MC Chief Learning Officer. Combined, the MC Team has decades of experience helping thousands of candidates navigate interviews at firms including McKinsey, BCG, Bain, Deloitte, Accenture and more.

When it comes to cases and consulting in general, the bottom line is always... the bottom line. Do you know - and can you calculate - the 4 types of profit? Which profit line item do consultants pay most attention to? Do you understand the levers that companies with different business models pull to affect the bottom line? For example, it would be critical to examine COGS for a grocery retailer considering a new market entry.
We cover all this and more in the intensive. Come ready with pen and paper to calculate answers to real prompts!
The 1st section is about running internal-focused calculations to determine the fundamentals of a business. In this 2nd section, we move to examine external factors. Put the two together, and you begin to get a much clearer picture of the strategy you will recommend.
In this section, we'll break down - and apply - the main market formulas to know for case interviews.
Operational formulas are critical to case interview success. For example, calculating Current Ratio will be important for a client teetering on the edge of bankruptcy. Calculating ROA will be critical for a manufacturing client considering an investment in new machinery.
This section of the intensive consists of learning and applying ops-focused formulas to real-world examples.
M&A formulas are some of the most misapplied in case interviews. In this section, we break down how to calculate potential Revenue Synergies, determine the Rate of Return, and more before making a go/no-go recommendation to your client. Keep in mind, the weight you place on certain metrics will depend on the goals of your acquirer - are they making a financial or strategic play?
After the session, you'll be ready to make a data-driven recommendation in any M&A case you see!
Happy holidays! I just wanted to thank you for coaching me for the case interview. I received 3 offers from EY-Parthenon, Accenture, and Novantas. I decided to accept EY-Parthenon, and I am very excited.
