TravelGirlDC, thanks for the input!

For all future interns - your last point is absolutely critical. Frequent, insightful updates are a great way to provide your manager more "meat" about your work, your development, etc.

Don't overwhelm them, but err on the side of thoroughness until you've built a strong working relationship and earned the trust.

Quote: "Send daily email updates. Every manager has a different style so tailor accordingly, but most appreciate frequent updates. At the end of each day (particularly if you’re working alone), send your manager an update with 3 accomplishments, 3 tasks for the upcoming day, and highlight areas where you need their feedback."

YES! YES! YES! Many times interns are getting assignments and those above don't always realize that the intern doesn't fully understand the assignment. I love day to day style status reports from interns/analysts/consultants. It helps me figure out easily where and why they may be off track.

The other side benefit to sending daily updates is it shows in detail what you are doing. As a manager, I may not be down in the details of what an intern is doing, but if they can adequately verbalize/type the skills and abilities they are learning via updates it helps me write glowing reviews for those I want to keep.

Hi Kevin,

With much of hardwork, pain and efforts, I have been trying to make an entry into Mgmt Consulting firms as a Generalist / Associate position, though coming from mid-career Engineering/IT Technical working Professional background (so, its a sort of career-transition here) without MBA degree.
I have gone through some of the leading consulting firms' websites hiring such candidates. However, at this point of time, I feel there is something else in the loop, which I am not able to understand. I think I have framed a good resume highlighting relevant facts and information.

So, I want to know the success path towards attaining Interview calls atleast. Any pointers, please ?

Further, could you please highlight some of the ways to approach Consulting firms to accept profiles belonging to my category ? How do I go about seeking a break into Management Consulting areas ?

I appreciate your valuable inputs and suggestions in this regard and oblige.

Looking forward to hear from you soon, Thanks - Narasimha

Kevin,

Great advice, and if I might add, most (if not all) of this is relevant even when one has started a full time role.

Looking forward to the 2nd edition of the consulting bible.
