Is there any consulting firm that does not only want top Ivy league students? Are all of them this strict? I read through this and it sounds impossible. I have my MBA plus 7 years of work experience and I feel that I wouldn't even be looked at. Is it different for experienced professionals?

No, GPA is important. We simply didn't cover it explicitly in the interview. If you have a low GPA it will hurt you a lot - that's the simple truth. A good way to compensate would be getting a high GPA in graduate school (eg, MBA, JD, etc).

I also have a question regarding the gpa. gpa was not at all mentioned in his experience. Is it because he is a non-traditonal student? what if I am from a non-target school in midwest also, and only 3.0gpa. Should I just give up consulting this area? Thx!

Anonymous - I agree there are exceptional parts to his background as you mentioned. But some of the fundamentals (eg, recognizing the need for school year work experience, the particular style of bold networking) are applicable anywhere. State-school applicants need an edge - Ryan clearly demonstrated that he had one.

The lesson is, If you sit on your butt, have no work experience, and don't do more than attend a few information sessions, you're not going to get the jobs you want regardless of your school.

With all due respect to Ryan's accomplishments, I think you should probably acknowledge that his success is the exception and not the rule. The fact that he was able to land offers out of a non-target school owes much to his previous experience. As a non-traditional student with very significant real world work history, including a tour in Iraq, his situation isn't really comparable to that of a 21-year-old first trying to break into the industry. By all means highlight his networking and focus on consulting right out of the gate, but let's face it, that won't be enough for the average state-school applicant.
